The much-hyped National Energy Conference, convened by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for taking stock of lingering energy crisis and suggesting ways and means to overcome the same on priority basis, ended in Islamabad on a rather disappointing note as much ado nothing. The moot has taken some measures which are far from being revolutionary, innovative, imaginative, bold, courageous and unpleasant as well as not practicable and have been announced, implemented and miserably failed even in the past more than once.

Additional & Sessions Judge Muhammad Rafiq has summoned former Pakistani Cricket Captain Shoaib Malik in his court on May 3, 2010 for selling invitation cards of his marriage ceremony. According to details, one Safdar Ali has filed a petition and leveled charges that the newlyweds (Shoaib Malik-Sania Mirza) has hurt the feelings of their fans by selling their marriage invitation cards for Rs 10,000 to Rs 15000 a piece.
The court also issued notices to Lahore CCPO Pervez Rathore and Race Course Police Station SHO to appear in the court on the date of hearing (May 3) to record their statements.

Britain has decided to withdraw the protocol accorded to Pervez Musharraf, who has been living in London since April last year, after a UN report on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination blamed him for not providing adequate security to her, a television channel reported here.
The TV channel claimed that the British government has decided to “take back” the protocol accorded to the former Pakistan president “after the UN report blamed him for not providing adequate security to Benazir Bhutto.” The extension of visa of Musharraf’s security guards has been turned down and the car provided to him was taken back,” it said

President Nicolas Sarkozy and his allies came under fresh pressure Monday to respond to party funding allegations that have been linked to a Pakistani bomb attack that killed 11 French engineers.
Sarkozy was spokesman for former prime minister Edouard Balladur’s 1995 presidential bid, at a time when the campaign is alleged to have taken kickbacks on a deal to sell submarines to the Pakistani navy.

US Defence Secretary Robert M. Gates Wednesday opened an inquiry into whether a top Defence Department official violated Pentagon rules by setting up a network of private contractors to gather intelligence in Pakistan and Afghanistan, reports New York Times.

In what will bring tremendous embarrassment to the government, the Supreme Court Wednesday declared the promotion of 54 bureaucrats to higher grades as null and void, cancelling the notification on the subject.
The bureaucrats are federal secretaries who were recently promoted to grade 22 by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on September 4, 2009. The SC directed the prime minister to make fresh appointments on these posts on merit. The PM made these promotions using his discretionary powers.
On Wednesday three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the case of promotion of 54 bureaucrats.

US to provide Pak navy with missile frigate .The United States is all set to provide Pakistan with a 64.77 million dollar guided missile frigate. The USS McInerney will be given to Pakistan under Foreign Military Funding. A spokesman for the Pakistan Navy says that a contract has been signed between the United States and Pakistan, which will allow the transfer of the ship. He said that it is important to mention that Pakistan will not have to pay a single dollar for the guided missile frigate. According to his statement, the spokesman says that the United States will not only hand over the ship, but will also refurbish the vessel, provide ammunition and train the ship’s crew. Under the agreement, the USS McInerney will be handed over to Pakistan on the 31st of August in Florida. The ship will be renamed and then commissioned as the PNS Alamgir. – The National Report
